Lorem Ipsum is simply a formal text (meaning form is the goal, not content) and is used by the printing and publishing industries. Lorem Ipsum has been the standard for formal text since the fifteenth century when an unknown printer randomly stacked a group of letters it took from a text, to serve as a manual or formal reference for these characters. Five centuries did not eliminate this text, but it even became used in its original form in printing and electronic typesetting. It spread widely in the sixties of this century with the issuance of Letraset plastic chips containing passages of this text, and it has spread again recently with the emergence of electronic publishing programs such as Aldus PageMaker, which also contained copies of the text. Lorem Ipsum.

what is the etymology

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not a random text. Rather, it has roots in classical Latin literature as far back as 45 B.C., making it more than 2,000 years old. Richard McClintock, a professor of Latin at Hampden-Sydney University in Virginia, searched for the origins of an obscure Latin word in the Lorem Ipsum text, consectetur, and while tracing this word through Latin literature discovered the unquestionable source. It turns out that the words of the text of Lorem Ipsum come from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the book “On the Ends of Good and Evil” (de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum) by the thinker Cicero, which he wrote in the year 45 BC. This book is a lengthy scholarly treatise on the theory of ethics, and was very popular in the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..” comes from a line in section 1.20.32 of this book.

For those interested, we’ve placed the standard Lorem Ipsum text in use since the 15th century below. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum are also made available in their original versions, together with the English versions translated by H. Rackham in 1914.
