Reach Out GCC’s Language Awareness Course is a focused and in-depth course designed to enhance your understanding of English grammar.

Two Modules

Participants must complete Module 1 before advancing to Module 2 unless they pass a placement test allowing direct entry into the second module.

Module One: Understanding Basic Sentence Structure (Total: 36 Hours)

This module covers the following key topics:

Basic Sentence Structure

  • Part 1 (6 hours)
    • Noun phrases and verb phrases (3 hours)
    • Adverbials, direct, and indirect objects (3 hours)
    • Part 1 assessment
  • Part 2 (6 hours)
    • Complements and complement verbs, distinctions between complements and objects (3 hours)
    • Dummy subjects (3 hours)
    • Part 2 assessment

Advanced Sentence Structure

  • Part 1 (6 hours)
    • Fronting (adverbials, complements, direct objects) (3 hours)
    • Clefting and pseudo-clefting (3 hours)
    • Part 1 assessment
  • Part 2 (9 hours)
    • Active vs. passive voice (3 hours)
    • Causative structures in the passive voice (3 hours)
    • Conditional structures (3 hours)
    • Part 2 assessment
  • Part 3 (9 hours)
    • Discourse markers (2 sessions, 6 hours)
    • Ellipsis and substitution (3 hours)
    • Part 3 assessment

At the end of this module, participants must pass the Module 1 test before moving on to Module 2.

Module Two: Mastering Complex Sentence Structures (Total: 18 Hours)

This module includes the following sections:

Advanced Sentence Structures 1

  • Part 1 (9 hours)
    • Finite adverbial clauses (3 hours)
    • Noun clauses (3 hours)
    • Relative clauses (3 hours)
    • Part 1 assessment

Advanced Sentence Structures 2

  • Part 2 (9 hours)
    • Non-finite clauses (3 hours)
    • Defining and non-defining clauses and phrases (Part I) (3 hours)
    • Defining and non-defining clauses and phrases (Part II) (3 hours)
    • Part 2 assessment

A final test will be given at the end of both modules.
